Eldest of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke's three children, Alec became one of the pillars his family depended upon early in his life. He kept the Templars from noticing Bethany's magic. Kept Carver from embarrassing himself on a regular basis. And when their father died, Alec took over the duties as the head of the household. Not that their mother wasn't competent, mind, but because a man's place was to protect his family.

Part of that protection involved enlisting as a soldier when King Cailan Theirin called for all strong hands to join the forces at Ostagar and fight an incoming Blight. Both Alec and Carver reported to the site of the battle, fought alongside the men, and saw Loghain Mac Tir's men turn away at the signal. It was a betrayal the likes of which Alec could not, and did not, forget. As soon as he could, he gathered his family and fled Lothering, only to watch Carver fall to Darkspawn and find himself faced with a shapechanging witch who carried them, as a dragon, to Gwaren.

They had chosen to go to Kirkwall, city of his mother's birth and the foundation for the rest of Alec's life.
